Plywood Flooring

Plywood Flooring

Plywood flooring (often called plywood over-boarding) creates the smooth, stable base that high-quality floor coverings need. By fixing premium flooring-grade ply over timber boards or mixed substrates, we eliminate movement, close gaps and deliver a flat, even surface that’s ready for wood, LVT/Amtico, vinyl or carpet – and built to last.

Flawless Plywood Flooring Base

A great floor starts beneath the surface. Plywood over-boarding stabilises old floorboards, bridges mixed substrates and provides the smooth, fastener-friendly platform that installers (and manufacturers) love. At TB Elliott Flooring, every step is handled by experienced fitters who prioritise long-term performance over quick fixes.

We measure, check humidity and identify substrate types (timber, concrete transitions, asphalt, anhydrite, chipboard). You’ll get plain-English recommendations on plywood grade, thickness and fixing pattern – no guesswork or hidden extras.

We use flooring-grade ply (e.g., SP101/FG1) in the right thickness for your site and floor covering, then fix on a tight grid with the correct fasteners. This prevents “drumming”, edge lift and screw pop-throughs that can telegraph into the finish.

All board joints are gapped, taped or filled as appropriate, then feather-finished to remove micro-steps. Result: a continuous, smooth plane that’s ideal for patterned LVT, herringbone and large-format planks or sheet vinyl.

Need quieter rooms or improved comfort? We can integrate acoustic underlays, thermal layers and underfloor heating-compatible build-ups, maintaining expansion allowances and adhesive compatibility for your chosen finish.

On-tool extraction keeps dust down. We trim doors/thresholds neatly, dispose of waste responsibly and leave you with a subfloor that’s flat, solid and ready to receive – plus an itemised handover detailing products and curing/fit windows.

Plywood Flooring FAQs

Thinking about plywood over-boarding? Here are the questions we’re asked most – with straightforward, fitter-led answers.

Plywood stabilises the surface, removes gaps and reduces deflection, giving adhesives a reliable bond and preventing ridges from telegraphing through LVT or sheet vinyl. It also provides a consistent plane for precise wood installations.

It depends on the existing boards and final floor. Typical installations use 6-12 mm flooring-grade ply; patterned LVT or sheet vinyl often benefit from the thicker end for superior smoothness. We’ll specify the exact build after survey.

Yes – when specified correctly. We use UFH-compatible adhesives and respect temperature limits and expansion allowances so the final floor remains stable and transfers heat evenly.

Sometimes. Plywood creates a solid platform, and we may apply a feather-finish or smoothing compound to perfect the surface for ultra-flat tolerances (e.g., click LVT, parquet patterns). We’ll confirm if it’s required.

Most rooms are over-boarded in a day, depending on size and repairs. We use dust-controlled tools, keep access routes tidy and can stage works around occupied homes. You’ll receive clear timings in your quote.
