Floor Preparation

Floor Preparation

A flawless floor starts with professional floor preparation. Before any wood, LVT, vinyl or carpet is laid, we assess, repair and perfect the subfloor so your new surface sits flat, bonds correctly and performs for years. Good prep prevents movement, squeaks, ridges and premature wear – saving you time, money and stress later.

Professional Floor Preparation:

We plan the right preparation for your specific floor covering – engineered wood, solid wood, LVT/Amtico, sheet vinyl or carpet – and deliver a clean, efficient process that leaves your subfloor ready for a perfect installation.

Professional Floor Preparation

Subfloor preparation is the foundation of every great installation. At TB Elliott Flooring, we combine technical know-how with old-school standards: detailed surveys, the correct products and meticulous workmanship that ensure your finished floor looks superb on day one and still does years down the line.

We start with a thorough, fitter-led survey: moisture readings, flatness checks, substrate identification and movement assessment. You’ll receive clear, itemised advice on exactly what’s needed – no guesswork, no sales patter, just practical steps for long-term performance.

Adhesion relies on a clean, sound surface. We remove laitance on new screeds, grind high spots, abrade contaminants, vacuum dust and prime appropriately for the chosen leveller/adhesive system. This prevents debonding, hollows and telegraphing.

We use high-quality levelling and smoothing compounds to achieve the flatness your floor demands – from feather finish patch repairs to full-area pours. Correct flatness is critical for click systems, parquet layouts and large-format planks/tiles.

Where moisture is present or DPMs are missing/compromised, we install surface-applied DPMs, moisture-tolerant primers and correct adhesives. This protects timber and resilient floors from cupping, gapping and adhesive failure.

On timber substrates we fit SP101-type plywood overlays or appropriate boards, securely fixed and joint-treated. We can add acoustic underlays for noise reduction and thermal underlays compatible with underfloor heating – all finished with neat thresholds ready for installation.

Floor Preparation FAQs

Thinking about floor preparation? Here are the questions we’re asked most – answered by our fitters.

“Screeding/levelling” are often used interchangeably. In practice, we use smoothing/levelling compounds to correct flatness and minor undulations, while thicker screed builds and structural repairs address larger height differences or weak areas. We’ll specify the right system after testing.

Small rooms may be prepared in a few hours; larger or complex areas can take longer. Most levellers cure for light foot traffic in 2-4 hours and are ready to install over within 12-24 hours, depending on product, thickness and site conditions. We’ll confirm timings on survey.

If moisture readings are high or a DPM is missing/damaged, yes. We apply a surface DPM and compatible primers/adhesives to protect timber and resilient floors. Where levels are borderline, we can retest after a drying period and advise the safest route.

Absolutely. We secure/replace loose boards, add plywood or specialist boards, tape and feather joints, and transition cleanly across mixed areas (e.g., timber to concrete) so the finished floor sits flat and stable.

Yes – we follow UFH commissioning protocols, use UFH-approved levellers/adhesives and respect expansion and temperature limits. Proper prep ensures even heat transfer and protects your new floor from thermal movement issues.
